A Walk To Remember

Emily and I have been really busy crafting lately, like too busy making crafts to even blog about it.  Sorry about that!
We did a really great craft a little while back: I brought some avocado maki rolls over to Emily’s house and we watched the famous 2002 classic film A Walk to Remember, starring Mandy Moore, Shane West, Daryl Hannah (!), and Peter Coyote. Is that his real name?
Despite making jokes about how we totally weren’t going to cry in the end like the pansies we were in 2002-we cried at the end. However, before the movie’s conclusion, Mandy Moore proves herself to be an overlooked style icon of the early ’00s. Everyone at the high school makes fun of Mandy’s grandma sweaters, but joke’s on them because she looked chic as hell.

See her smirking while Shane West drapes over her shoulders? Yeah, she knows. We also couldn’t believe what a serious hottie Shane West was! I even followed him on twitter for a few weeks after…but often the cold hard truth with these actors is that uhhh it is much better to look at them and imagine what they are thinking about than actually know what they are thinking about…the other definition of a heartbreaker.
Anyway, it was a great, easy diy craft!

tea, cookies, pom-poms and paper flowers

Happy 2013!  Emily and I had a great, crafty weekend.  Our first craft was to go out on Saturday night and get beer and pizza!  Unfortunately there are no photos, but we had a lovely walk from north Berkeley to downtown, wherein I instagrammed many plants, and it was very nice.  The January cold has been crisp and refreshing…here in California, at least.

The next day, we were feeling mellow and decided to drink tea and listen to music and cut and fold paper for a few hours.

 Tissue-paper flowers and pom-poms are really fun to make for a party or similar event, but we don’t have anything coming up so this was just for why-nots.  Also, this is an especially easy activity as there are only three necessary ingredients:  tissue paper, pipe cleaners, and scissors.

For the tissue paper flowers, begin by cutting “petals” from rectangular and square pieces of tissue.

Create 4-8 sets of petals in three relatively different sizes–center, middle, outside.  Gather the smallest set of petals into a “bouquet” and twist their bases together.  Continue adding tissue petals this way, until the flower is, in your personal opinion, finished, and then wrap the end of a pipe cleaner around the twisted tissue base.

So much fun!  Okay, so Caitlin’s co-worker taught her how to make pom-poms last week, and we are obsessed, we want them everywhere, we want to make wreaths and garlands and hats and chandeliers.

Yup.  Who am I?  Obsessed with tissue paper pom-poms.

Stack six to eight pieces of the *same size* tissue paper, or more depending on how fluffy you need your pom-pom to be, and then accordion fold them together–like you might do when making a fan on a humid afternoon.  Bind the folded tissue at the center with a piece of pipe cleaner and trim “shark tooth bites” into either end.

Okay, cool.  Fan the tissue and pull each layer of paper up towards the center–aka “fluff” the tissue.

Yeahh!!  So, I guess you could say we had a tea party?  Oh, almost forgot the cookies–more on those later, but for now here is a shot of the last man standing:

Christmas Glögg!

Emily is swedish, so it’s obviously a very important holiday tradition to make and consume as much “glögg” as possible around Christmas time.  Get it while it’s hot!  No, literally.  Glögg is a wine served spicy and hot, an ideal beverage on any dark, wintery night.

Spicy Glögg Ingredients

  • One bottle of red wine.  We suggest an organic table red or maybe something biodynamic but Carlo Rossi from the bodega also works.
  • At least half a liter of brandy or vodka.  Tito’s Handmake Vodka is our personal favorite but when cooking Glögg, we prefer to use a brandy as we believe it makes for richer flavor.  Speaking of Brandy, wasn’t she supposed to come out with a Christmas album this year?  What happened with that?
  • Ten cardamom pods
  • One cinnamon stick, broke-down.  Like the palace. Okay not really.  Just break the cinnamon stick, whatever.
  • One half an orange peel.  We used fresh so we could eat some orange in the process but dried is okay too.
  • One half pound of sugar.  Lumps are more fun to use.
  • Five or six cloves
  • One half cup of raisins
  • One half cup of almonds, chopped

Heat the mix (wine, brandy, fruits, spices, & nuts) in a pot on the stove.  BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO LET THE MIXTURE BOIL as all the alcohol will evaporate and that’s the best part.  So let it be hot for about forty-five minutes.  Yes, this does require something like militant attention but patience is a virtue, is it not?

Emily chooses to serve Glögg with the fruits, nuts and spices, but if that’s not your thing then strain the Glögg through a cloth to remove the additions.

If it doesn’t seem strong enough, add more brandy, and serve over hot lumped sugar!

Christmas cookies, Lucia buns, hang time

That’s some real talk right there.  The holidays are a very special time of the year–people are busy and exhausted but happy and dazzled by lights and tinsel sprucing up public spaces and neighborhoods and interiors.  It really is a holidaze.  Also, December always offers the blackest of black nights, making all evening activities that much more dramatic and important.  Ah!  We are inside now!  Away from the darkness…I mean, right?
